Manager, R&D Strategy and Planning May. 1, 2019




The R&D Strategy and Planning Manager is responsible for the coordination of all product, market, and trend research and reporting activities to support engineering product teams (Infotainment, Driving Assistance Systems, Autonomous Driving Systems, Steering, Brakes, Lighting) in the research & development groups at the Plymouth based Mobis Technical Center of America (MTCA).

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and lead product, market, and technology trend research and reporting
  • Research topics include areas such as autonomous/ADAS, electrification, connected vehicles, regulations, and chassis (steering, lamp, brake)
  • Facilitate tech sensing to research and champion PoC projects by engaging cross functional teams
  • Facilitate and support the development of the mid and long term product strategy and planning for MTCA teams
  • Manage research, product planning, and ad hoc report objectives of technical specialists in team
  • Identify, share, and support understanding of current government rules and regulations, and identify future regulatory activities
  • Manage administration team that supports translation, budgeting, and reimbursement activities
  • Identify conferences, seminars, and trade shows relevant for product teams, and organize attendance
  • Identify network of academic research to support current and future product enhancement and collaboration
  • Maintain and improve communication channels with key collaborators: Korea HQ, local managers and expats, potential startup partners, academic institutions, and M.CUBE

Collaborative Working Relationships

  • Communicate, understand, and convey needs and direction of HQ in Korea
  • Work closely with R&D team members and the business development team
  • Seek out and build relationships with startups for potential partnership activities, including collaboration with M.CUBE

Key Tasks

  • Improve processes and develop research and report frameworks
  • Ensure that recurring reports, such as daily, weekly, and monthly technology reports are completed accurately and on time
  • Meet with technical specialists and leadership to identify research needs, project goals, and share vital information
  • Oversee team conference, travel, and resource budget

Experience Level

  • Combined 12+ years of experience in automotive market research & engineering, with a minimum of at least 3 years in each
  • Experience in a role that required significant communication with Korean companies

Educational Requirement

  • Minimum required Bachelor's Degree in business, automotive engineering, or other relevant discipline
  • Masters or PH.D degree preferred

Required Skills

  • Knowledge and experience with Korean business culture
  • Knowledge of market research frameworks
  • Strong foundational knowledge of automotive industry
  • Expertise in at least one key field (autonomous, electric, connected vehicle, chassis, regulations) and familiarity with others
  • Product planning, with experience developing PoCs

Language Requirement

  • Korean fluency (read, write, speak)
